We recommend starting early! This hike will take you to the heart of Torres del Paine National Park. After breakfast, request your box lunch and get ready for a day filled with breathtaking Patagonian landscapes. After about two hours of hiking, you will pass the Francés campsite and arrive at the entrance to the French Valley. You can leave your backpack at the Italiano campsite, where the park rangers are located, and begin your ascent into the French Valley.
Climb over large rocks and then continue through the forest until you reach the French Lookout (Mirador Francés). Here, you will be rewarded with incredible views of Los Cuernos, turquoise glacial lagoons, and dramatic hanging glaciers cascading down the eastern face of Paine Grande (3,050 meters above sea level). If you are lucky, you might hear the thunderous sound of ice breaking off the glacier or witness an avalanche—something quite common in this area.
Continue hiking for another 3 hours and you will reach the breathtaking Británico Lookout (Mirador Británico). Enjoy your box lunch and a well-deserved rest. Then descend along the same trail back to the Italiano campsite.
From there, continue to Refugio Paine Grande (2.5 hours). Take your time—the trail is mostly flat. In the evening, enjoy a delicious dinner at the lodge.
